What is FCL-X?

FCL-X is a water-based, PFAS-free lithium-ion battery fire extinguishing agent engineered specifically for lithium-ion battery incidents. It is designed to mitigate the risks associated with thermal runaway events, reduce toxic gas release, and help limit reignition.

FCL-X extinguishers are UL listed for Class A fires and have been tested by SafeLabs and certified to the Dutch NTA 8133 standard.

What Makes FCL-X Different?

Deep Penetration vs. Surface Smothering:

Foam and vermiculite sit on the surface. FCL-X is a water-based solution engineered to penetrate battery cells and target reactions at the source.

Toxic Gas Mitigation & Neutralization

FCL-X is formulated to react with hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas generated during lithium battery incidents, helping neutralize it into more stable byproducts.

Hydrogen Explosion Prevention

At elevated temperatures, lithium may react with water and release hydrogen gas. FCL-X is designed to create a protective barrier on lithiated graphite that helps limit hydrogen production.

Neutralizing Thermal Runaway

In controlled testing, FCL-X has demonstrated measurable reductions in thermal output during lithium-ion battery thermal runaway events, with reported reductions of approximately 20% under test conditions.

How Lithium-Ion Batteries Behave in Fire

High-energy battery systems require suppression designed for battery incidents.

Lithium-ion battery fires behave differently than traditional household fires. Understanding why helps explain why charging environments deserve thoughtful protection.

Lithium-ion batteries store electrical energy inside sealed cells. Under certain failure conditions, internal components can overheat and trigger a chain reaction known as thermal runaway. During thermal runaway, the battery can generate intense heat, release flammable gases, and continue reacting internally even after visible flames are reduced.

This differs from common combustible fires involving materials like paper, wood, or trash, where removing heat and oxygen is often sufficient to suppress the flame.

Why Fire Fighters Trust FCL-X

Even after the flames are out, a battery can reignite minutes, or even hours later. FCL-X creates a protective barrier that helps stabilize the battery and prevent dangerous flare-ups. FCL-X has additional features to help limit toxic exposure to people and the environment.

No PFAS or harmful residue.

Reduces toxic exposure like HF

Why We Carry FCL-X at eRideLife

“We work around lithium-powered devices every day. If we’re going to recommend protection, it has to be purpose-built.”

Testing & Validation

FCL-X has undergone structured evaluation protocols developed to replicate lithium-ion battery propagation scenarios and fire suppression certification standards.

What makes a lithium battery fire extinguisher different from a regular one?

Lithium-ion battery incidents can behave differently than common household fires. FCL-X extinguishers are developed specifically for lithium-ion battery suppressant use and engineered to address risks associated with thermal runaway events.

Standard household extinguishers are typically designed for common combustible materials.

Which size should I choose for my setup?

Charging small electronics like laptops or camera batteries → 1L

Charging an EUC, electric scooter, or Onewheel in a garage (under 750Wh) → 2L

Charging multiple devices in a workshop or expanded garage → 3L

Is 1L enough for an EUC/PEV?

No, 1L is for laptops, cameras, drones and other small electronics or common home fire sources.

For most garage EUC charging setups, the 2L is commonly selected for added capacity and margin. The 1L is best suited for electronics and compact charging areas.

Do I still need a standard fire extinguisher?

FCL-X is designed specifically for lithium-ion battery incidents. It also functions as UL listed class A fire extinguisher for ordinary combustibles such as; wood, paper, cloth, trash, rubber, fabrics, and many plastics.

Can lithium batteries really catch fire while charging?

Lithium-ion batteries store electrical energy inside sealed cells. While incidents are uncommon, charging environments contain stored energy and should be approached thoughtfully with appropriate safety planning.

Where should I mount my lithium battery fire extinguisher?

Recommended placement:

Near your charging station

On a garage wall within reach

Near battery storage shelves

Inside trailers, vans or RV setups

Keep it accessible to where lithium-powered devices are actively charged.

Can I use one unit for both electronics and my garage?

Yes. Many customers use a 2L in the garage and a 1L near desks or electronics charging areas.

Is this only for large electric vehicles?

No. These extinguishers are designed for lithium-ion battery incidents across a range of lithium-powered systems, including electronics, EUCs, scooters, and tool batteries. We have additional sizes available for larger vehicles.
